Since the pedometer on my phone takes too much battery, I thought a Fitbit would be a good investment.

For anyone that cares, I’m looking at the Charge HR.

Everyone I know who has one loves it.

Except the one I paid for and gave to my wife.

Her’s has broken twice, the band snapped on it. First time she contacted them and they said, sure send it back we’ll replace it. Second time she’s lost motivation to send it back because it only lasted about 3 months.

It seems we’ve gotten 2 bad ones in a row because everyone I know has a good experience with them, just wanted you to know the odd ball one exists and that they have damn fine customer service if something DOES go wrong.

Can’t you just count your own steps?

I just bought the wife last year’s Garmin Vivosmart (retail $150, Amazon $65 or so). The key difference are it’s more like a smartwatch — it actually displays your texts and alerts on an OLED screen, not just via vibrating alert. It’s also waterproof, which most Fitbits are not. However, Fitbits have better and more consistent quality...in part because they only do a few things, and very well (except heart rate — they’re way off, especially during exercise). FWIW...this is my first foray into high-tech wearables. The Garmins are notorious for screen failures, too. TL;DR: They’re all trendy and ridiculous, IMHO, but if they truly get people interested in exercise, than that's a big positive. Keep an eye on the Charge — they periodically drop below $100 if you watch Slickdeals. Otherwise, $130+ most everywhere.

Most, if not all, of the PPG based devices have accuracy issues. For exercise you really want an EKG band.

Bingo — the Garmin we bought has a chest strap, but I doubt the wife will actually wear it. But IMHO, heart rate-based training is inferior to Rate of Perceived Exertion (ie, know your body and your intensity ranges). But HR gives people a nice, objective number to strive for.

They handed out a cheap version of this to everyone at work. The competition aspect was fun, but I took mine to Utah where I thought I’d clean up by hiking everyday. Instead, I lost it on the first day and got no credit for any of those steps. I exercised for nothing!

FitBits have become very popular where I am, but I don’t ever wear products on my wrist, they cost a lot of money, and they’ll probably be out of style in a short time. They seem like the 2016 version of PowerBalance bands, but a bit better.

I had a Fitbit One for about a year, but then it stopped working. I liked having it but haven’t found the motivation to replace it.

If all you’re looking for is counting steps, then a MisFit is a much cheaper option. I can find the Flash models for like $20 at most. And you can pop the coin looking thing in your pocket and continue to wear actual watches. It’ll sync to your phone with Bluetooth, but it’ll continue to count steps even if bluetooth is not available.

I also like the other stuff that the Fitbit does.

I have one and am not sure I an recommend. My original fell apart after 6 months, however I did get a free replacement. Still seems iffy on quality, my girlfriend’s did the same thing. Otherwise a great gadget.
